Helicopter Operations/Helipad Information
Bayfront Hospital South Pad safety fence is high.  EC-135 aircraft use caution when landing on south pad as not to hit tail bumper of Fenestron. Please refer to images below.

Pilot information

Bayflite Communications Center (Bayflite Comcen) is responsible for coordinating all helicopter operations into and out of Bayfront Medical Center (BMC).  Both helipads are monitored visually and through video camera feeds.

All EMS helicopters inbound to BMC will ensure that their respective communications centers provide telephonic notification to Bayflite Comcen at least 10 minutes prior to the helicopter's arrivat at (727) 893-6010.  After such notification, Bayflite Comcen will monitor frequency 123.025 MHz.

In addition, all pilots inbound to, outbound from, or transitioning within 3 miles of Bayfront Hospital will make the following self-announce calls on 123.025 MHz.

INBOUND:

  • 5 mins out & approach dirction
  • 1 min out
  • On final approach

      OUTBOUND:

  • Prior to liftoff with direction of travel

      TRANSITIONING:

  • 5 mins out & direction of travel
  • When clear by of BMC by 3 miles

Direct communications to Bayflite Comcen (call sign: "Bayflite Communications")       may also be made on 123.025 MHz.  The Comcen will provide information about known hazards and other EMS aircraft operating in the vicinity.  Aircraft inbound to BMC will be directed whether to land on the north or south pad as required by traffic and patient status.

SCENE FLIGHTS

In addition to the above requirements, helicopter crews inbound to BMC from a scene flight shall ensure patient report is provided to the BMC Emergency Department either using Pinellas County Med-D channel (800 MHz), or by having their respective communications center relay the report telephonically to the BMC emergency department at (727) 893-6185.

Helipad Information:

Bayfront Medical Center (2FD3) is located in Class D airspace approximately 3/4 miles west of Albert Whitted Airport (KSPG) at 27.45.48.1N 082.38.32.36W.  It is equipped with two roof-top helipads, each 28' x 28' wide with a capacity of 12,000 lbs. If a helicopter needs to shut down after disembarking its patient, it should advise the Bayflite Comcen when inbound and request parking instructions.

Please note the following noise abatement area, and arrival/departure information:

Helipad Info

An elevator with direct access to the emergency department is located on the north side of the north pad.
The safety fence on the east and west side of the south pad is elevated.  The fire suppression nozzles are located in the NE and SW corners of the pad.  EC-135 aircraft are advised to use caution as clearance between these obstacles an the tail bumper is minimal and contact can be made if other than a minimal flare is used on landing.  Landings facing south or north are not affected by these obstacles.
Pilots will find weather information and Internet access in the Comcen, located between both pads.  At no time will a pilot leave the rotor arc of a running aircraft that is parked on the helipads.  Pilots can expect up to a 30-degree compass/HSI error due to magnetic interference on the helipad.

Fuel is available 24 hours a day at Albert Whitted Airport (KSPG).  Bayflite Comcen can coordinate for after-hours refueling if requested (from 21:00 - 06:00 daily).
